Milestone was proud to organise a recent site visit of the New Wear Crossing in Sunderland, the week after the 2,500-tonne bridge deck had been pulled 120m out across the River Wear. Our Associate Directors Darran Kitchener and Paul Jackson-Cole were joined by the CIHT National President and Chief Executive along with a number of contractors and Council representatives for a presentation on the bridge design and build.
An accompanied walk-over of the site to see the reality of constructing such a large structure was undertaken. The bridge is phase two of a five-stage re-generation scheme linking the A19 to the Port of Sunderland, along the south bank of the river. The bridge is expected to be completed in spring 2018 and plans are already being made for a return visit to the site when the 105m tall bridge pylon is erected early next year.
