Today we’re celebrating International Women in Engineering Day.
Women’s Engineering Society (WES), is a charity which began in 1919, following the end of the First World War. INWED was launched in the UK ten years ago. Celebrating and focusing in on women in engineering, it’s main objective was to bring attention to career opportunities within the engineering industry. In addition to that, it also raises the profile of inspiring women within this sector globally. The Campaign often has a theme that it bases around. This year that theme is Safety.
Celebrating Amy
Here at MTP we’d like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our own, Amy Wreford.
Growing up, Amy had always thought about studying Teaching. Transport Planning wasn’t a job that she had ever come across. Being a natural mathematician and having a strong interest in Geography, she already had the basis of this career path. Excelling in her chosen A Level subjects and encouraged by her tutors, Amy went on to study at Newcastle University. She studied throughout the Covid Pandemic in 2020, ensuring she graduated with an amazing 2:1 in Geography & Planning. Amy accomplished all of this whilst continuing to work for our fantastic NHS service at RVI Hospital alongside her father.
Amy’s inspiration has always been her parents, both who are nurses and extremely career driven. Witnessing her parents working long, difficult shifts created a drive of dedication and determination within her. Amy demonstrates these qualities daily in the office.
Amy joined our Northern team in August 2021 as a Graduate Transport Planner, and within her first year she was promoted to Assistant Transport Planner. Quickly becoming an integral part of the team, Amy is relied upon for many aspects of the work.

Hearing from Amy
Here is what Amy has to say about her role as Assistant Transport Planner – My role includes writing a range of reports to be submitted as part of a planning application for a range of sites, this includes residential estates, quarries, schools, and retail developments. As part of this I’ve gained knowledge in AutoCAD and modelling software. Personally, I find the modelling is what interests me the most. I enjoy applying real word traffic numbers to theoretical models to produce results for how a junction will work in the future.
What would you say to any young girls thinking of coming into the industry? “My advice to anyone is don’t be afraid to try new opportunities. If you don’t try you’ll never know and you might just end up finding your niche!”
