A Lidl Success: Planning Permission Approved. Durham County Council have approved plans for a new food store. A project worked on by Milestone’s Northern Office. The site was previously a bus station and had faced an uncertain future. Constructed in 1920, the bus station was demolished in 2019. However since then planning has been submitted to turn the area into a new supermarket. Therefore bringing new jobs to the area.
Milestones had been asked to prepare the Transport Statement and Travel Plan to accompany a planning application submitted to Durham County Council for the construction of a retail unit. The site is located in the town of Stanley and lies immediately south of the A693. The Transport Statement outlined the transportation implications and consider the highways of the proposed development. Because the development comprises of a food store unit , parking spaces (including EV, accessible and family spaces), cycle parking spaces and a substation with associated infrastructure. It will promote a sustainable travel option for staff and customers. It is well located in terms of transport and the local highway network offers wider links to Durham, Sunderland, Chester-Le-Street, Gateshead and Newcastle.
A planning report notes how the new supermarket will improve the current shopping options in the area, as the majority of residents currently shop at nearby branches of Asda and Aldi, with locals also visiting stores in Consett.
Councillors approved the planning application and work is due to start on the site later this year.
